Armonia celeste, pertanto, e Italia . . . . Italia . . . .

Himmlische Harmonie also und Italien. . . . Italien. . . . . immer Italien: zum Guten oder zum Schlechten.

Raphael, "The great genius of art, explained in a single painting":
Our Lady of the Grand Duke

It is the article offered today, 03. March 2020, in the midst of the health crisis caused by the "coronavirus", by the authoritative newspaper of Germany <Die Welt>, Section "Culture", with the invitation to carefully observe the hand of the Child .

No other artist in his works has raised Raphael (1483-1520) to the high levels of classicism the vision of the ideals of the Renaissance in terms of human dignity, monumentality of form and balance of composition. The Medici Pope Leo X appointed Raffaello in 1515 as director of the works of the Church of San Pietro and conservator of the Ancient Monuments of Rome, whose archaeological excavations, relief and conservation were started right at that time.

Like many Renaissance artists, Raphael also possessed the tools of domination of Architecture to the same extent as those of Painting. In Villa Madama Raffaello managed to combine the sum of his experiences with the assignment given to him by the Pope, to the point that the fame of his pictorial art has often relegated to the background his exceptional contributions in the field of Architecture that must be brought back to the levels of knowledge it deserves (no) in a context of great technical and technological innovations and, above all, of form.

The Madonna del Granduca is considered to be one of the best known works of Raphael to the point of having been preferred by the Grand Duke Ferdinand III of Lorraine. It is an oil painting on wood (84.5x55.9 cm) dating back to around 1504 and now preserved in the Palatine Gallery in Florence. The original provenance which is presumed to have been for a private destination when the young Raphael arrived in Florence is uncertain. For the most expressive and enigmatic face of the Madonna, the painting is considered to be one of his most famous masterpieces.

The Madonna, depicted standing, wears the traditional red robe and the blue cloak. The impression is drawn that you are advancing towards the viewer, emerging from the darkness. Her figure expresses a mixed decision with a partial monumentality in a skilfully balanced figural relationship with the Madonna to hint at a right rotation counterbalanced by the just perceived left rotation of the Child. With the left hand resting gracefully on the ideal axis of the face-bust of the mother, almost to attract the attention of the spectator. It is an operation of great spatial and dynamic mastery of the already established Renaissance painting to make us forget the Byzantine-style static nature of the medieval Madonna-Child figural composition in the love relationship between mother and son.

The play of shadows and light there is no doubt that it recalls the well-known "nuanced" Leonardo that certainly from Urbino began to appreciate in the early years of his Florentine stay with references to the Madonnas of the Robbia brothers and the effects the relief and plasticity of Florentine sculptors such as Ghiberti and Donatello ..

In the Madonna of the Grand Duke, Raphael exalts the draping of the Madonna 's mantle by recalling the meaning of life and it is precisely the reference to the child' s torsional movement that highlights that pictorial freedom hitherto unknown. In essence, movement and emotion are combined to find depth in the calm expressiveness of the two subjects exalted by the darkness of the background, subsequently added to the composition thus confusing to the Madonna values of presence and spirituality exalted, with good reason, to the role of fame.

There would be much to write about description, interpretation and symbology, historical references, style and technique with the drawing that precedes painting, color and lighting effects, composition and framing of Raphael's masterpiece which materializes in a final image in which to predominate I am the complexion of the Madonna and Child, the sinuous gracefulness of the drapery of Mary 's cloak, the lines stretched in height the shapes of the body of the Child, all enhanced by the chiaroscuro chromatic balance that ends in a nuance that has gone beyond Leonardo.

Already by his contemporaries and Raphael he had been seen as "The God of Painting", the master of classical beauty, the genius of the composition of form and color, light and shadow in all the media he addressed. In Rome he measured himself with Michelangelo who accuses him of espionage. The meeting takes place in the Vatican with Michelangelo dealing with the Sistine Chapel and Raphael with the Pope 's rooms.

A story, that of the two painters, marked by a rivalry that led to masterpieces of art with Michelangelo to accept against his will the Pope 's assignment for the vault of the Sistine Chapel, which eventually revolutionized art and image of man, and Raphael with the "School of Athens" and other frescoes to invent a revolting vision of universal harmony.

Heavenly harmony, therefore, and Italy. . . . Italy. . . . . always Italy: for better or for worse.
